We have just completed the final event in the 2018 SAYRA Regatta Series for the Tanzer 16 Class Association.
Here’s a recap of all the races included in the Series:
The Mayor’s Cup and Mid-Atlantic District Championship in early June at Lake Townsend—-Three boats competed in fairly light and squirrelly air as is common at Lake Townsend. Pete Thorn prevailed, with David Mobley second, and Ken Whitt, third.
The Governor’s Cup in mid June at Kerr Lake—Pete Thorn finished in first, followed by David Mobley, David Gilbert, Paul Manis, and Paul Nicholson, respectively.
The Miller Time Regatta in mid-July at Kerr Lake—-Five boats attended the event, but only two elected to sail, with Pete Thorn finishing first, and Dave Gilbert finishing second. Arch Altman and Ken Whitt each decided to take the conservative ride home, and Paul Nicholson had equipment problems.
The 2018 50th Annual National Championship was held in conjunction with the Blackbeard One Design Regatta in mid August at Blackbeard Sailing Club in New Bern, NC–The winds were strong but manageable and the seven boat T16 fleet managed to avoid the capsizes that have often characterized this event. Ken Whitt with Derek Hoar as crew won the event determined by a very close finish with Eric and Joleen Rasmussen in the final race. Pete Thorn was third, followed by Paul Manis and Jay Hood, respectively, in fourth and fifth place. Arch Altman and Chris Weed rounded out the competition.
The North Carolina Championship was scheduled in conjunction with the Indian Summer Regatta at Lake Waccamaw was cancelled due to Hurricane Florence flooding.
This year’s competition was won by Pete Thorn, with the assistance of a number of different crew. It was not a close contest, but Ken Whitt, our 2017 Champion, and Paul Manis were second and third, respectively. The trophy will be awarded at the Winter Social.
Congrats to these three and their crew folks and all who participated. Let’s get ready to rumble again next year!!
