50th Tanzer 16 Nationals by Jane Staveley
The 50th Tanzer 16 National Championship was held in conjunction with the Blackbeard Sailing Club One Design Regatta. We had 7 boats turn out, with “long timers” (we won’t say “old timers”) as well as someone racing a Tanzer 16 for the very first time! We were happy to have completed 5 races over the 2 days and everyone had a fine time (and was pretty tired by the end). In close competition, the trophy was handed over from last year’s winner, Pete Thorn, to this year’s first place skipper Ken Whitt. Second place went to Eric Rasmussen, while Pete Thorn captured third. Ken Whitt with crew, Derek Hoar, won the Blackbeard Tanzer 16 Class and the concurrent 2018 50th Annual Tanzer 16 National Championship Regatta with 5 points. Eric Rasmussen with crew, Joleen Rasmussen, was second with 7 points). The skippers rounding out the fleet were Paul Manis, Jay Hood (sailing solo), Arch Altman (Tanzer Class Association President), and Chris Weed. Crew (Gavin, Derek, Jolene, Walt, Jane, and Amanda) enjoyed their time on the water, especially the beautiful conditions on Sunday. Thanks to BSC and all the volunteers for hosting this great event, and thanks to the Race Committee for all their efforts!!
